Distinguished Achievement in Accounting Education Award

     Congratulations to David E. Stout of Youngstown State University!

                 Winner of the 2008 AICPA Distinguished Achievement

                                  in Accounting Education Award

About the Award

The AICPA Distinguished Achievement in Accounting Education Award is designed to recognize full-time college accounting educators distinguished for excellence in teaching and for national prominence in the accounting profession.

The award has the dual function of extending profession-wide recognition to the recipient as well as promoting role models in academia. State CPA societies as well as individuals submit nominations for the annual award. Self-nominations are not accepted.

The AICPA Pre-certification Education Executive Committee reviews the nominations and selects the national award winner. The award is presented to the honoree at the AICPA’s Spring Council Meeting.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Distinguished Achievement in Accounting Education Award, the nominee:

  1. Must be a current full-time or recently retired (within the past five years) accounting educator at a post-secondary educational institution, as demonstrated by a proven record of a teaching career;
  2. Must be distinguished for excellence in classroom teaching, as demonstrated by summaries of student evaluations, letters from former students, and receipt of previous teaching awards;
  3. Must be involved in curriculum development, as demonstrated by innovative teaching practices consistent with the broadening role of the CPA;
  4. Must be contributing to the accounting profession, as demonstrated by active involvement in professional activities such as leadership in national professional accounting organizations;
  5. Must exemplify the philosophy of the CPA Vision - enabling individuals to shape their futures by communicating the total picture with clarity and objectivity, translating complex information into critical knowledge, anticipating and creating opportunities, and designing pathways that transform vision into reality - as demonstrated by commitment to life-long learning and the effective development of incoming professionals.

The nominee need not be a CPA nor hold a doctoral degree. Educators who are noted for their teaching abilities, but are now primarily involved in administration or research are also eligible for the award.

Nomination Process

State CPA societies and individuals making nominations should select their nominees based on an assessment of the nominee's qualifications for meeting the AICPA eligibility requirements. Self-nominations will not be accepted.

Nominees who are not selected for the award remain eligible for future consideration for two additional years, provided that they still meet the selection criteria and an updated nomination form and biographical data are re-submitted. Past award winners are not eligible for re-nomination.

Application Procedure

The deadline for submitting a completed nomination packet is January 18th. Each nomination packet must consist of a completed nomination form, a nomination statement with supporting documentation and a copy of the nominee’s current resume. The statement should explain how the nominee meets the AICPA award eligibility requirements and provide specific information in support, such as, record of teaching career, summaries of student and/or peer evaluations (not more than 5), letters from colleagues (not more than 5), letters from current and/or former students (not more than 5), previous teaching awards, innovative teaching practices, and leadership positions in the profession. The statement should also explain how the nominee demonstrates involvement in, and awareness of, the CPA Vision process.
